ECS Unveils Indoor Adaptive Playground in Rochester, MN

In the heart of Rochester, MN, a transformative space has emerged, breaking barriers and redefining the concept of play and ECS is proud to have been part of the project. Boundless MN, a 40,000-square-foot adaptive playground designed to be inclusive of all children and adults is now open. More than just a play area, Boundless MN is a symbol of accessibility, providing indoor social, play, and activity opportunities for everyone.

The team at ECS worked collaboratively with the teams at Boundless and SouthEastern Minnesota Centers for Independent Living (SEMCIL) to create a space that is welcoming and accessible for all to enjoy that included more than 27,000 sq ft of concrete work.

Project Details

Boundless MN goes beyond traditional playgrounds. It's a sanctuary of inclusivity, featuring a playground and sensory equipment, a full basketball/volleyball court, indoor turf space, and dedicated toddler areas. The facility is a haven of creativity with flex spaces designed for various activities.

ECC focused on providing high-quality work on the interior and exterior concrete. For the interior, all of the indoor ramps are concrete and ECS conceptualized and built a ‘quiet room’ with concrete walls for anyone who needs a reset at the playspace. The quiet space allows for those moments of peaceful reflection, reading, games, or simply chatting with friends. Every corner of Boundless MN is crafted to be a welcoming space for all.

Creating a Better Community

Boundless MN is more than just a playground; it's a part of SEMCIL. This organization was founded by people with disabilities for people with disabilities, and champions civil rights and individual control. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SEMCIL extends its services and support to people of all disabilities at any age.

SEMCIL's impact extends across southeastern Minnesota, covering Dodge, Fillmore, Freeborn, Goodhue, Houston, Mower, Olmsted, Rice, Steele, Wabasha, and Winona counties. By establishing civil rights and fostering individual control, SEMCIL creates an environment where people with disabilities can thrive.

Accessible spaces in communities are vital for fostering inclusivity and equality. These spaces serve as bridges that connect individuals of all abilities, ensuring that everyone, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges, can participate fully in community life. When we prioritize accessibility, we dismantle barriers, both physical and societal, allowing individuals with disabilities to engage in social, recreational, and educational activities. This not only enhances the quality of life for those directly affected but enriches the entire community by embracing diversity and fostering a sense of belonging.

By creating environments that accommodate various needs, communities not only comply with legal standards but also uphold the principles of compassion and understanding. Accessible spaces promote a culture of empathy, encouraging community members to recognize the value and contributions of individuals with disabilities. In essence, these spaces become catalysts for positive change, inspiring a more inclusive and compassionate society.
