Tell us about your role at ECS

Dan: As a Concrete Superintendent with ECS, I serve as the bridge between the field and the office. I manage multiple commercial concrete projects simultaneously while helping deliver quality products and positive experiences for our clients.

One of the things I enjoy most is that no two days are exactly alike. I'm involved with our field crews, planning meetings, project coordination, and leadership discussions. It allows me to work alongside talented people while helping projects move forward safely and efficiently.

You started with ECS as a foreman. What has your journey been like over the past six years?

Dan: I joined ECS as a Foreman in July 2020, leading crews in the field until the fall of 2025 before stepping into my current role as Superintendent.

One of the best parts of the job has been collaborating with our crews to solve challenges and watch projects become reality. Every project brings something different, and that's what keeps construction exciting.

Over the past six years, I've had the opportunity to help build:

  • Schools

  • Banks

  • Retail stores

  • Restaurants

  • Apartments and townhomes

  • Parks

  • Museums

  • Rest areas

  • Indoor accessible playgrounds

  • Aquatic centers

  • Manufacturing facilities

  • Laboratories

  • Public works buildings

  • Warehouses

Looking back, it's rewarding to see the impact those projects have on the communities we serve throughout Minnesota.

What initially drew you to the construction industry?

How has ECS helped you grow professionally?

Dan: ECS has invested in my development from day one.

I've had opportunities to participate in leadership training while also learning through real-world experience on active job sites. Some of the most valuable lessons haven't come from a classroom, they've come from conversations with coworkers, mentors, and leaders who took the time to share their knowledge.

I've always tried to be a sponge. Every conversation offers an opportunity to learn something new. Whether it's improving communication, becoming a better leader, or finding more efficient ways to manage projects, I'm constantly looking for ways to grow.

Hopefully, by applying those lessons every day, I'm honoring the people who invested their time in helping me succeed.

Which ECS core value resonates with you the most?

Dan: Integrity.

To me, integrity is the foundation for everything else.

Doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, is what builds trust with coworkers, clients, and the communities we work in. If you consistently act with integrity, the rest of the core values naturally follow.

Construction is built on relationships, and relationships are built on trust.

What do you enjoy most about working with the ECS team?

Dan: Without question, it's the people.

Our field crews are hardworking, dependable, and enjoyable to work alongside. We also have an outstanding office team supporting the field every day. Everyone plays an important role in making projects successful.

There's something incredibly rewarding about working together to build something tangible that people will use for decades.

I also appreciate the relationships we develop with our clients. Every project gives us a chance to understand different perspectives, solve unique challenges, and continue improving.

That combination of teamwork and client relationships is what makes ECS such a great place to work.

What keeps you motivated after six years?

Dan: There's always another challenge to tackle.

Construction never stands still. There are always new skills to develop, new technologies to learn, and new projects that push us to improve. Early in my career, I took pride in the quality of my own craftsmanship.

Today, that pride has grown into wanting to see the entire company succeed. Watching our crews develop, seeing younger employees advance, and helping ECS continue growing is incredibly motivating.

What keeps you motivated after six years?

Dan: Be willing to learn.

If you take pride in your work, invest your time, and continually improve your skills, opportunities will come.

Construction is an essential industry that creates careers with real purpose. Every building, school, business, and community space starts with a strong foundation.

It's rewarding work because you can look back years later and say, "I helped build that."

If you're willing to work hard and stay committed, there are countless opportunities to grow at ECS.

What advice would you give someone considering a career in commercial concrete construction?

Looking back, what are you most proud of?

Dan: While I'm proud of every project we've completed, what stands out most isn't the buildings themselves, it's how we built them.

Integrity matters.

When you approach every project with honesty, accountability, and pride in your work, you're creating something that lasts much longer than concrete alone.

That's something I'm proud to be part of.
